Wind Energy: Current State of Play, Opportunities and Challenges ahead
The UK is investing an incredible amount on the development of round 3 offshore wind energy in order to meet its clean energy targets of 2020. To reach capacities planned for round 3 offshore - in the ranges of multi-gigawatts - the wind farms will have to be located at farther distances offshore than current round 2 farms and employ the state of the art turbine technology. This poses several technical and economic challenges which need to be addressed. A reliable, and cost effective operation is crucial in large scale integration of intermittent renewable sources of energy and wind is of no exception. Currently wind energy costs more than conventional generation technologies, namely coal, gas, and nuclear.
