Gas, Oil and CO2: Is Cinderella Shale now the Belle of the Ball? Prof Andrew Aplin inaugural lecture
Having been ignored for decades by wicked (step-) geologists, shale is now the geological centre of public attention as a major new source of gas and oil. In an increasingly polarised debate, this lecture unravels some shale gas facts and fictions and also indicates the central role that shales will play in the safe storage of both CO2 and radioactive waste.
Andy is the first Professor of Unconventional Hydrocarbons in the UK. He has worked on the geology of shale for the best part of 30 years, exploring their central importance in many aspects of petroleum exploration and production, as well as CO2 storage. Prior to his appointment to Durham, Andy was Professor of Petroleum Geoscience at Newcastle University, after several years with BP Exploration.
