DEI Lecture: War, Energy and Sectarianism in Syria

26th February 2014, 16:15 to 17:15, D133, Maria Kastrinou

Maria Kastrinou is an Early Career Fellow at Durham Energy Institute. She is a political anthropologist that has conducted long-term ethnographic fieldwork in Syria.

Wars in the Middle East, it is commonly noted, happen for two reasons, oil is one of them.

  • To what extent is the war in Syria a conflict over natural
    resources and energy transition?
  • To what extent is the war an age old fight for Sunni or Shia hegemony?

This talk critically examines the intersections between the politics of energy, war and the political economy of collective identities.
