Off-grid Rwanda: Energy Seminars hosted by the Engineering and Mathematical Sciences at Durham University

20th June 2013, 13:00 to 14:00, E245, Engineering and Computing Sciences Department , Andrew Crossland and Oghenetejiri Anuta

Andrew Crossland and Oghenetejiri Anuta, will speak on "Off-grid energy in Rwanda" a Durham Energy Institute-funded pilot project.

Andrew Crossland and Oghenetejiri Anuta, will speak on "Off-grid energy in Rwanda" a Durham Energy Institute-funded pilot project. They are also presenting this work soon at an international conference in Thailand.

In rural Rwanda where grid connection will not be provided for many years, communities turn to diesel generators or PV systems for electricity. Diesel generators are expensive to run and fuel access is often difficult. PV systems, although clean and free to run, are unreliable and the batteries have a typical life of just two years! The two speakers visited Rwanda in September last year in an interdisciplinary DEI study into the reasons for failure of these PV systems. They will present their findings from 13 health centres and schools, and show ways in which the design life can be improved.
