DEI E4Dev Seminar Series

31st October 2012, 13:00 to 16:00, Room E245 (School of Engineering)

A seminar series organised by Professor Marcus Power for E4Dev.

The seminar will have two presentations.

1. Gavin Allwright will discuss his project to create low cost, zero emissions ships.

The Greenheart projectworks to create new types of low-cost, zero-emissions small cargo ships that use environmentally clean and sustainable sail and solar power, to provide coastal communities around the world with an affordable means of transport. Gavin’s presentation will cover the following themes:

  • an overview of the scale of the impact of shipping, ports and the trading system on the environment.
  • Sustainable Shipping - current trends and new shipping solutions
  • an introduction to the Greenheart project
  • a case study of the South Pacific.

2. Khaiko Makwela-Wali, from local company Green Globe Architecture, will present on his involvement in “The Universal Sustainable Habitat Development (USHD) project”.

The project focuses on the development and introduction of clean accessible energy in rural and peri-urban areas in Africa by installing new community infrastructures that meet all their energy needs from renewable sources that are integrated into the buildings.
