DEI Online Seminar Series: Creating a Zero Carbon Vehicle: The Durham University Solar Car
In the context of road vehicles, a challenge for many alternatives to fossil fuels is meeting the level of energy demand required - in terms of on-board energy storage and/or aggregate energy demand. Hence reducing the energy outgoings to propel a vehicle is a key enabler of alternative energy sources and vectors, as well as a means of making direct energy savings. This talk will outline the design and build of the Durham University Solar Car and its crossing of the Australian continent in 2019. Through aerodynamics, light-weighting and a novel electrical drivetrain, this vehicle is able to drive at highway speeds using an order of magnitude less power than a conventional vehicle. A by-product is a vehicle with infinite range. The project aims to showcase some of Durham’s research expertise, to provide an educational catalyst and to provide an unrivalled experience for the many students involved on an extra-curricular basis.
David is a Professor of Engineering at Durham University and he acts as Faculty Advisor to the Durham University Electric Motorsport team. His research is principally in vehicle aerodynamics and aeroacoustics and he is past chairman of the Society of Automotive Engineers Road Vehicle Aerodynamics Forum Committee.
