Department of Classics and Ancient History

Undergraduate Study at Durham

The Durham Department of Classics and Ancient History is one of the largest in the UK, and enjoys a high reputation in this country and internationally. We have a large number of full-time academic staff, who between them specialise in the languages, literature, history, culture and philosophy of the Greco-Roman world, as well as its impact on later centuries up to the present day. We offer students a very wide range of modules, which are grouped into three Single Honours and two Joint Honours programmes. These programmes are built upon a common first year of study, designed to emphasise the unity as well as the exciting variety of Greek and Roman antiquity. A central feature of our programmes is the opportunity to study the Greek and Latin languages, either to embark on them from scratch or to continue on from what you have already learnt.
