Dr Oliver Dickinson
Oliver Dickinson was Reader in Greek Archaeology at Durham until his retirement in 2005. He is interested in the whole of Greek prehistory, but particularly in the Late Bronze Age, the rise and fall of Mycenaean civilisation, the period of transition from Bronze Age to Iron Age, and the archaeological and social background to the Homeric poems. He is also interested in the history, society and religion of later Greece.
He is the author of The origins of Mycenaean civilisation (1977) and The Aegean Bronze Age (1994, repr. 1994, 1995, repr. with corrections 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002), and The Aegean from Bronze Age to Iron Age: continuity and change between the twelfth and eighth centuries B.C. (2006), and the co-author, with R. Hope Simpson, of A Gazetteer of Aegean civilisation in the Bronze Age: the mainland and islands (1979).
He is currently Chairman of the Lefkandi Committee of the British School at Athens, and a member of the Middle Helladic Argolid Project. He is contributing an entry to the Oxford Handbook of the Bronze Age Aegean on the Collapse at the end of the Bronze Age, and three to the Blackwell Encyclopaedia of Homer, on the Dark Age historical background, the Catalogue of Ships, and the Geometric period.
