The Political Functions of Villas in the Works of Cicero
My dissertation centers on a close reading of villas in Cicero’s letters. I analyze the functional transformation of these residences, especially in light of the politically volatile period as well as Cicero’s political aspirations and activities, in order to uncover the motivations behind their shifting use. I also consider the villas of Cicero’s treatises, the depiction of which, though somewhat idealized, was nevertheless informed by and in response to the politically restrictive conditions of the Late Republic.
