Careers talk from alumnus and Goldman Sachs Managing Director Stephen Withnell
The Department of Classics and Ancient History at Durham University is committed to forging links with its alumni and to providing subject-specific careers support for its students. We are therefore delighted to welcome Stephen Withnell back to Durham to speak to our students.
Stephen graduated from Durham University in 2003 with a BA (1st Class Hons) in Ancient, Medieval and Modern History. He is currently the Managing Director responsible for Metals & Mining Investment Banking at Goldman Sachs for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Stephen joined Goldman Sachs in 2006 and is based in London. Prior to 2006, Stephen worked for Citigroup in London and Hong Kong.
Stephen has been focused on natural resources investment banking for 15 years. He has advised on more than US$150 billion of mergers and acquisitions and capital markets transactions for BHP Billiton, Anglo American, Boliden, Xstrata, Glencore, Nyrstar, First Quantum Minerals, Vedanta, Zinifex, WMC and several others. In addition to this, he is a Governor of Stonyhurst College and of Westminster Cathedral Choir School, and sits on the Investment Committee of the British Jesuit Province.
His talk will provide an opportunity for our students to hear from and converse with a graduate who has built a highly successful career in the city, and who can advise our students on careers in investment banking, and offer specific insights into what it’s like to work at a leading international company like Goldman Sachs.
