Latin Reading Group
(Academic year 2008/9)
Ingo Gildenhard and James Powell are running a weekly Latin Reading Group this year, in the context of the Durham Centre for the Classical Tradition.
The designated texts for 2008/9 are the Latin 'Lives of Virgil', a body of evidence that bridges the chronological divide between the classical and the medieval periods. Copies of the texts are available at the meetings.
We would like to stress the informal nature of this enterprise. Thus no-one will be called upon to translate (though all are welcome to volunteer). Rather, this is an opportunity to bring together Latinists from different periods and disciplines, to look at some intriguing texts that normally do not appear on course syllabi. The Latin is relatively easy, and you should feel welcome to join whatever your background in the language
