The Chemistry Department is a thriving centre of scientific activity. Every year it welcomes over 100 new honours Chemistry undergraduates, 30 new postgraduate students and numerous post-doctoral fellows and visiting scientists. We are small enough for you to make good friends and interact closely with staff, yet large enough for us to provide a wide variety of courses and opportunities. The Department is staffed by a total of 110 people, including academics, research assistants, technicians and secretaries. The Department is busy throughout the year, and you will sense its vitality at every turn.
There are currently 39 permanent members of the academic staff, each of whom leads a research group. The research interests of the different groups encompass all the traditional areas of chemistry and many less traditional topics, and include both fundamental and applied work.
The Department is extremely well-equipped, with modern research laboratories, extensive state-of-the-art instrumentation and world-class facilities.
There is a very lively student chemical society, DUCS, which arranges a lecture programme, external visits and social events. The lectures feature a wide variety of speakers from industry and academia, and range from spectacular lecture demonstrations to accounts of the role of chemistry in the arts or in forensic science.
The Department is located at the heart of the main university complex within the Science site, just 10 minutes walk from the city centre. It is situated right next to the University Library and is centrally placed for Durham colleges.
