£15m investment in Chemistry at Durham

(11 February 2020)

Over the next 10 years, we're investing £15m in the refurbishment of our Chemistry site to enhance our Department’s ability to deliver world-class education, research and student experience.

We want our education to be challenging, enabling, research-led and transformative and we want to equip our students with the skills they need to fulfil their potential.

To do that, we need to invest in our teaching and research spaces so we can continue to deliver world-class education.

Our Department is 3rd in The Complete University Guide 2020, ranked in the world top 100 by the QS World Rankings 2019, and in the top five for chemistry research and first for research impact in the UK (Research Excellence Framework 2014) but there's much more to come.

Investing in science

Over the next 10 years, we're investing £15m in the refurbishment of our Chemistry site to enhance our Department’s ability to deliver world-class education, research and student experience.

The development will also enable us to support advancements in teaching practice and maintain our current research and produce world-leading research outputs and impact.

The refurbishment project

The project will consist of two distinct programmes of work which includes general building maintenance commencing Easter 2020, and a three-year Teaching & Research Laboratory refurbishment programme.

Our Teaching Laboratory refurbishment will run from Easter to September 2020, followed by the Research Laboratory refurbishment commencing in spring 2021 until September 2022.

The project also includes provisions for ongoing building maintenance until 2030.

We will share more information about the refurbishment project in the coming months.
