Department of Chemistry

Service Manager: Dr Aileen Congreve

The Chemistry department can accommodate a wide range of chromatographic services depending on your requirements. Chromatography may be analytical in nature, with focus on separating a complex mixture in order to qualitatively or quantitatively identify one or more component. Gas chromatography (GC) and high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC) are versatile techniques based on the differences in the affinity of compounds in a mobile phase, interacting with a stationary phase. In this way, a wide range of components can be analysed simply by changing the stationary and / or mobile phases. Using a semi-preparative HPLC-MS, we can also analyse and isolate compounds on a large scale, for purification or for future processes.

The instruments that we have available include:

Gas Chromatography

  • Thermo TRACE GC with flame ionization detector.

A range of GC columns are available.

Please ask if GC-Mass Spectrometry is required.

High Pressure Liquid Chromatography

  • Analytical Varian LC- diode array detector
  • Semi-prep Varian LC- UV-vis detector
  • 3 x PerkinElmer LC - diode array detector, fluorescence detector, refractive index detector and UV-vis detectors are available for these systems.

A range of LC columns are available.

Discuss with the Chromatography team on the best method of submitting your sample. We can also discuss your requirements and advise you on the analytical route to maximise the result from your sample.

We can analyze most samples in <3 working days from receipt of sample and purchase order number; method development or larger batch samples may require a longer turn round time. Please let us know if your sample is urgent.
