All members of University staff are invited to attend Matriculation and may request to act as a marshal or to join the staff procession.
Staff were requested to confirm their availability to marshal at Matriculation by Tuesday 18th September 2018. If you are still able to offer assistance as a reserve, please contact the Ceremonies Unit firstname.lastname@example.org or 0191 3346125.
Marshalling provides an opportunity for staff to be involved in Matriculation, to contribute to this special occasion and help create a welcoming atmosphere. Marshals are vital to ensure the smooth running of this ceremony, providing advice and directions to staff and students. Marshalling also provides an opportunity for you to meet the students and work with other colleagues from across the University.
Instructions and training will be provided in advance and refreshments are supplied on the day at the Cathedral restaurant.
Staff are invited to form a Procession at ceremonies, if eligible, for which academic dress must be worn. Staff are requested to sign up using the online form by Thursday 20th September 2018.
The Staff Procession is comprised of degree holders who are also:
- current or retired members of University staff
- College mentors
- members of Council and Senate (including members without degrees)
- Durham SU Sabbatical Officers and JCR/MCR/GCR Presidents (including members without degrees)
- Honorary or Visiting Fellows
- Teaching staff of Durham University students employed by other institutions (e.g. teaching staff on Common Awards and the KMPG programme)
Information for Attendance
Procession staff are requested to gather in the Chapter House of the Cathedral by 30 minutes prior to the ceremony to be put into procession order. Pre-ordered robes will be available for collection from the Chapter House and must be returned to this location following the ceremony or by 5:00 pm.
Staff are reminded that the safety of any personal belongings left in the Chapter House cannot be guaranteed and are requested to only bring with them what they are able to carry.
During Matriculation, entrance to the Cathedral is strictly via the Galilee Chapel, which is to the right of the main North Door as you approach the Cathedral. Please do not attempt to enter via the North Door.
Further Information for College staff
Students attend Matriculation by their College and College staff are requested to organise their undergraduate and postgraduate students to gather and process to and from the Cathedral. Colleges are asked to arrive by 30 minutes prior to the ceremony start time.
At each ceremony a nominated Head of College is required to witness the signing of the Matriculation book by the student representative. As we are aware that sometimes the College Principal or Master is unable to attend we do not presume that they wish to be added to the procession list. If the College Principal or Master is unable to attend, please ensure that a deputy is appointed for this occasion. The member of staff taking on the Head of College role at the ceremony is requested to indicate this when registering their attendance via the Staff Procession Form.
