Laidlaw Scholarship

The creation of the Laidlaw Scholarship was made possible by Lord Laidlaw of Rothiemay’s forward-thinking vision and unswerving commitment to student development. The Scholarship has grown considerably since its inception and is now being delivered at the University of St Andrews, the University of Oxford, University College London and the University of York. From 2018, the Scholarship will increase internationally with the programme likely to be delivered at the Universities of Hong Kong, Dublin, Cape Town and Columbia New York. As such, the long-term vision of the programme is the creation of a diverse network of international Laidlaw Scholars who will reinvest their knowledge, skills and experiences amongst their peers, colleagues and networks.

The Laidlaw Undergraduate Research and Leadership Scholarship was established to build a community of leaders who can contribute effectively in all facets of society and positively benefit others. The main aim of the Scholarship is to equip undergraduate students with the necessary research and leadership skills to help them fulfil their ambitions beyond their course of study, whether they intend to pursue a career in research or in another sector. We are looking for ambitious and self-motivated individuals with the capacity to design and conduct an original research project, and to commit to developing their leadership skills, knowledge and behaviours through the accredited leadership development programme.

The research programme will take place over six weeks during two summer periods starting with the summer of 2019. An innovative leadership programme endorsed by the Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) is provided, including two weekend long courses in the first year and two in the second year. A programme of leadership talks will also be available to attend throughout the year, allowing Scholars to further develop their leadership and interpersonal skills. The last key element of the programme is a scheme of mentoring junior Scholars, allowing successful applicants to contribute to the wider Laidlaw community at Durham University and develop their communication skills.
