Key Closing Dates
The closing dates for graduate schemes vary between sectors and employers. A significant number of employers begin the recruitment process very early in your final year of study and consequently closing dates can be as early as October/November, particularly in the finance/banking sector, but in other sectors too. Monitor company websites and their social media feeds to make sure you keep up to date with those you're particularly interested in. You can also use online support and information provided through sites such as Prospects, Bright Network, Grad-Jobs.com and Target Jobs.
Be aware that schemes can open for application as early as July; this is particularly important in respect of employers that advise early application and who will make job offers on an on-going basis.
It is also important to remember, if you are a penultimate year student, that internships are increasingly used by companies as a means of recruiting graduate trainees. Many companies start this recruitment process even earlier by providing short work experience placements to first year students. Internships can be advertised during Michaelmas term onwards.
Not all internships are formally advertised, so be sure to make direct speculative applications to organisations which really attract you and meet your needs. Our internships page provides information on opportunities local to Durham, including flexible placements which can fit around your studies during term times.
