Destination of Leavers of Higher Education (DLHE)
What is the DLHE survey?
The Destination of Leavers of Higher Education (DLHE) survey is a national survey which all universities are obliged to conduct on behalf of the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA). It is used to find out what graduates are doing six months after leaving university. Graduates answer questions about their employment circumstances and whether they have gone on to further study. According to the combination of these two answers, each graduate falls into one of HESA's publication categories. Please note, prior to the 2011-12 collection the survey only covered those who were living in UK or EU when they started at Durham.
The DLHE year runs from the 1st August to the 31st July and we carry out two collections, one in April and one in January. The Careers Centre collect the information via postal, on-line and telephone surveys and these are coded according to national guidelines and then input into Banner.
The survey is a huge undertaking. For example in the 2013-14 survey there were 4288 UK & EU leavers in the Destination of Leavers from Higher Education population for Durham and HESA require us to achieve an 80% return which we did by collecting 3537 returns.
At the close of the collection in April, the data is sent to HESA. Once cleansed and verified the destinations data is used by HESA to produce their annual statistics, as well as by various newspapers in their league tables. The most used and well known league table is the Times Good University Guide which rates universities across a range of measures including ‘Graduate Prospects’.
Where can DLHE data be viewed?
We use the data internally to produce reports for University committees and departments and for use by students in the Careers Information Room.
A Destination Summary Sheet is produced for each department which provides you with a detailed breakdown of your graduate destinations split by level of study, using the HESA publication categories. To access these sheets please click this link - Department Destination Summary Sheets.
For more detailed information by course including information on graduate's job titles, salaries, employers and further study destinations, please click this link to our new reporting tool - Graduate Employment Market Statistics (GEMS).
