These papers were brought forward and taken through an extensive review process from a wider body of work arising from several major research project sthat I myself have been leading since 2006 on what I have called the Asianization of the Middle East through the generous support of UK research funding councils, most notably from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), and also the British Academy and the Higher Education Funding Council in England and Scotland. Since 2001, the research on 'Asianization', including new work on the making of the New Silk Road, has also benefited from support of the al-Sabah Programme at Durham Univrsity, UK.
