About Us
The University Health & Safety Service (HSS) is an independent central service which provides professional advice and support to the University on managing the health and safety risks arising from its activities. The HSS is an enabling service, whose aim is to assist the University deliver its strategic objectives in a way which does not put staff, students or visitors at risk of harm to their health or safety.
The staff of the HSS are committed to providing health and safety services and advice on risk assessment and control which is: Proportionate, Objective, Sensible, Impartial and Timely.
They do this by liaising with Senior Managers and Health and Safety Co-ordinators to ensure legislative and best practice standards are achieved throughout the University. Find out more about Health and Safety Coordinators.
Incident Reporting
All accidents and incidents, including injury, fire, dangerous occurrences and near misses, must be reported to us so that we can ensure that incidents are investigated appropriately and lessons learnt to prevent a similar incident occurring.

Policies and Guidance
The Health and Safety Service are responsible for ensuring that the University’s Health and Safety and Fire Safety Management policies are maintained. They provide further, more detailed guidance on specific risks and methods of compliance with the law and conformity to internal and external standards.
