Outline programme

10.00 Registration, coffee/tea

10.15 Introductions to each other and the day

10.30 Session 1: A Practical Introduction to Two Versatile Methods of Participatory Action Research, facilitated by Kristin Kalsem.
This session will explore two methods for doing PAR: Group Level Assessment (GLA) and Asset Mapping. A GLA is an effective and efficient way to gather data from a larger group (up to 60) and asset mapping is an adaptable method that can be useful at all stages of research. Participants will learn by doing as we examine the strengths and challenges of these methods.

12.45 Lunch

13.30 Session 2: On Becoming an Action Researcher: Structured Ethical Reflection and Understanding the Roles and Realms of Action Research, facilitated by Mary Brydon-Miller.
This session will engage participants in the process of Structured Ethical Reflection, designed to help identify the core values that inform our work as community-based researchers and how they are put into practice throughout the research process. Then we will investigate the multiple Roles and Realms of Action Research—from empathetic relationship building to advocacy and activism—and consider what kinds of skills and dispositions we should seek to embody as community-based researchers.

15.45 Closing remarks and evaluation
