Regulation 12 Endowed Libraries

This Regulation was adopted by the Council on 5 December 2023

Statute 2: "Endowed Libraries" the charity known as Bishop Cosin's Library founded by a charter of 20 September 1669; and the charity known as the Maltby Library consisting of the books, maps, engravings, prints and other pictures given or bequeathed by the Right Reverend Edward Maltby, Lord Bishop of Durham. 

1. General  

a) This Regulation supports Statute 22 and should be read in conjunction with it.  

b) Terms defined in the Statutes will have the same meaning in these Regulations.  

c) Terms defined in Regulation [13] shall apply to all Regulations.

2. The Endowed Libraries 

a) The charity known as "Bishop Cosin’s Library" founded by a charter dated the 20th September 1669, and the charity known as the "Maltby Library" consisting of the books, maps, engravings, prints and other pictures given or bequeathed by the Right Reverend Edward Maltby, Lord Bishop of Durham and of an endowment settled by an indenture dated the 16th January 1855, together with their respective endowments shall be managed and administered by the University as trustee of the same in accordance with the provisions of their respective governing documents in force from time to time.

b) The income from the endowments of Bishop Cosin's Library and Maltby Library shall respectively be applied by the University for the purposes of those libraries.
