Professor Clive Roberts, Executive Dean (Science)

The Executive Dean (Science) is responsible for the strategic development and financial performance of the Faculty of Science. A key academic leader, supporting and enhancing research and teaching performance within the Faculty and an important ambassadorial role for the Faculty and the University.

Professional background and expertise

Clive joined Durham University in March 2024 from the University of Birmingham where he was the Director of the Birmingham Centre for Railway Research and Education (BCRRE) and previously Head of the School of Engineering. He also founded and led the national UK Railway Research and Innovation Network (UKRRIN).

Clive has over 25 years' experience in Higher Education and a track record in attracting significant research income and in international growth, facilities and partnerships development.

Clive's academic interests cover a range of interdisciplinary areas including sensing and data analysis; complex system simulation; control systems; energy and sustainability; risk and safety assessment; AI and machine learning; cybersecurity and systems engineering.

Education and qualifications

Clive holds a BEng in Electronics from the University of Wales, Cardiff and a PhD in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from the University of Birmingham.
