Wolfson Research Institute for Health & Wellbeing / DEMOS 'Grimmer Up North? Health in An Age of Austerity' - Wednesday 29th May 2013. 17.30 - 20.00

"Grimmer Up North? Health in An Age of Austerity", an event jointly presented by the Wolfson Research Institute for Health & Wellbeing and DEMOS.

Wednesday 29th May 2013, 17:30 for refreshments, followed by the event from 18:30 - 20:00, Lindisfarne Centre, Durham University, Windmill Hill, Durham. DH1 3LJ

This joint event is the curtain raiser for a larger programme of engagement between the Wolfson Research Institute for Health & Wellbeing and Demos on the theme of public health. The debate will be chaired by Chris Jackson, presenter of BBC1's Inside Out and will feature an expert panel consisting of Professor Clare Bambra, Director of fthe Wolfson Research Institute for Health & Wellbeing, Claudia Wood, Deputy Director of Demos, Peter Kelly Director of Public Health for Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, Ian Greener, Professor in the School of Applied Social Sciences and Director of the ESRC North East Doctoral Training Centre, Chi Onwurah, Labour MP for Newcastle Central and Guy Opperman, Conservative MP for Hexham.

 "Grimmer Up North" will consider north/south health inequalities and possible solutions, the challenges to and issues for public health attainment in an age of austerity and current and future working conditions including redundancy, part-time work, underemployment and job insecurity. It will also aim to consider changes to the NHS and whether the system will be capable of dealing with an ageing society and comparatively scare resources as wellas changes to welfare policy. The audience will be encouraged to ask questions.

Wolfson Workshop - An Introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS): A Practical Guide

9:30am to 4:00pm, Room B001, Holliday Building, Durham University, Queen's Campus, Stockton-on-Tees, Alison Copeland and Joanne Cairns-Nagi

This workshop will be run by Dr Alison Copeland, Post Doctoral Research Associate in the School of Geography and Mrs Joanne Cairns-Nagi, Teaching Fellow in the School of Geography.

This course teaches what a GIS is and what you can do with it. Working with various components of the ArcGIS system, you will create GIS maps, explore and analyze the data behind the maps. By the end of the course, you will have a solid understanding of how GIS maps and ArcGIS tools are used to visualize real-world features, discover patterns, obtain information, and communicate that information to others.

This workshop is open to Wolfson Fellows, Wolfson Postgraduate Associates, Geography Staff and Postgraduate Students.
