ESRC Seminar Series - Workshop 1: Worklessness and Health Inequalities: Research, Policy and practice perspectives

25th June 2015, 10:00 to 15:00, Joachim Room, Hild Bede College, Durham University

This is the second event in the ESRC Seminar Series Revitalising the Health Equity Agenda (ESRC ES/M003027/1), which has the overarching aim of revitalising policy, practice, and academic work on inequalities in health. The series is a project of the Special Interest Group on Health Equity in a Glocal World, Wolfson Research Institute for Health and Wellbeing, Durham University.

Worklessness is an important determinant of health and health inequalities. Equally, people with a long-term health condition or disability are twice as likely to be out of employment as those with good health. Being out of work due to ill health often results in engagement with the welfare system. The reform of incapacity-related benefits has been a high priority under successive UK governments.

This workshop will bring public health and social policy academics, policy makers, and health professionals together to think about worklessness and health inequalities from a public health perspective. The day will consist of presentations and roundtable discussions with an overall aim of supporting the development of national and local strategy around this issue.
