Wolfson Guest Lecture: Cigarette smoking and social inequalities in the UK by Professor Hilary Graham

12th October 2012, 12:30 to 14:30, Wolfson Research Institute, Queen's Campus Stockton, TS17 6BH

The Wolfson Research Insitute is delighted to welcome Professor Hilary Graham, Professor of Health Sciences at the University of York to deliver an exciting guest lecture.  Registration is essential. To register for this event please click here to book your place.

Abstract:

A hundred years ago, the cigarette was a mark of social distinction for affluent white men. Today, men and women are equally represented among the UK’s smokers, a nicotine-dependent population drawn disproportionately from poorer groups. Between then and now lies the story of a silent killer with so much to tell us about how health risks emerge and become patterned by social inequalities. The lecture tells this story.

Biography:

Hilary Graham is Professor of Health Sciences at the University of York. She has a background in sociology and social policy. Her research is concerned with how social inequalities impact on people’s health - and how public health policies can have negative as well as positive impacts on groups in the poorest circumstances and the poorest health. Details of her publications can be found at https://hsciweb.york.ac.uk/research/public/Staff.aspx?ID=577

She was the Director of the ESRC’s /Health Variations Programme/ (1996-2001) and the DH /Public Health Research Consortium /(2005-11) and a member of the Independent Inquiry into Inequalities in Health (/Acheson Report/ 1998).
