On defining climate and climate change

22nd January 2014, 17:00 to 19:00, Birley Room, Hatfield College, Durham
CHESS Seminar Series in Climate Change
Charlotte Werndl (London School of Economics) How to define climate and climate change is contentious, and this paper analyses the main definitions of climate and climate change. How to define climate and climate change is conceptually interesting, but choosing good definitions is also vital from a pragmatic perspective.

Adopting definitions with serious problems can lead to wrong judgements about climate and climate change and may imply that there is no relation to observational records such as the past mean surface temperature changes. These practical implications will be highlighted throughout the talk. Please register attendance by emailing the centre Administrator at admin.chess@durham.ac.uk
