We offer three different 'pure' research degrees, MA, MLitt, and PhD; and also two 'hybrid' research degrees which include a taught element, the DThM (Doctor of Theology and Ministry) and the Integrated PhD.
'Pure' research degrees are about research. You will be carrying out independent, supervised work towards your thesis from the very beginning of your studies. You will be supported and guided by an expert supervisory team throughout, and your progress will be assessed by a series of formal reviews during your studies. The sole requirement to complete the degree is to submit a thesis and pass a viva voce examination. (No viva is required for the MA by Research.)
There is no requirement for research students to undertake any taught courses, professional experience or other training, but there are plentiful opportunities for them to do so and most of our students take up some of these while they are here.
Our 'hybrid' research degrees incorporate some taught elements and structured training with a full doctoral dissertation. The Integrated PhD combines a version of our taught MA programmes with a classic PhD to produce an integrated four-year programme. The DThM, offered in conjunction with Cranmer Hall and the Wesley Study Centre, is a professional doctorate in practical theology, intended primarily for practising Christian ministers and normally studied part-time.
