Current Postgraduate Research Students
Mr John Berard
My writing and research has been informed by my work with youth and young adults across a variety of contexts including the church, para-church and the college classroom. From that experience questions have emerged about how faith communicates in contemporary culture; in particular questions concerning culture and gospel, new forms of church (ecclesiology), and the nature of ministry with youth (missiology). My long interest in youth ministry, popular culture, education and leadership has also informed my work and led to the publication of Consuming Youth (lead author) published by Zondervan/Harper Collins.
My current research is grounded in those interests and seeks to deepen the conversation around the intersection of theology, culture, adolescence, and missiology. With its origins in theological ethnography my doctoral work sets out to explore the experiences of skateboarders and their community, and to investigate the ecclesial significance of the longest running indoor skate park in Canada, which is a significant and established participant of that community.
