Professor Francis Watson on the Gospel of Jesus' Wife

(20 September 2012)

On 19 September Karen L. King of Harvard Divinity School announced the existence of a small piece of papyrus containing eight lines of Coptic text from an early Christian gospel (available here).

Here Jesus refers to Mary Magdalene as "my wife", which has understandably stimulated intense media interest. However, Francis Watson (Durham) argues that this text may be a modern forgery. His short article may be downloaded here. A more accessible version of the article for non-specialists may be downloaded here.

Also available here is Francis Watson's recent article on the so-called "Secret Gospel of Mark".
