Durham University Sutton Trust Summer School

Social Programme

Student life isn’t only about studying. On the Sutton Trust Summer School you will also get a taster of different societies, activities, sports and workshops that the University has to offer. Take a look below to find out more!

On top of world-class academic sessions and tailored support to meet your needs The Sutton Trust Summer School offers you the opportunity to get a real feel for student life through a diverse range of social activities. These might include (but are not limited to!):

  • Quidditch

Did you know that part of The Philosopher's Stone was filmed in Durham's very own cathedral! What better way to get into the spirit of all things Durham then playing a game of quidditch, complete with quaffles and bludgers!

  • Take charge and...

...find out what DUCK stands for and help put on your own event for all to enjoy. This could be a fancy dress formal or a circus themed evening of fun...

  • Have you got what it takes to be an assassin?

You'll only know once you try out one of Durham University’s more unusual societies!

  • Mentors vs Students Challenges

Did somebody say competition?

  • Debating

Want a platform to put your views across? Enjoy being a part of a lively forum discussing a wide range of topics? Then this activity's for you!

  • Cinema showing and games nights

Perhaps the busyness of the week means all you want to do is chill out and enjoy a movie or some board games. Never fear that option is also here!

''The whole experience felt so natural to me; I didn't feel like I was 17 and only there for a week of my summer holidays, it felt as though I was actually a student at Durham!''

Student Mentors

Your student mentors will lead the way in these exciting activities. They will be the most important people you meet all week long and will be able to answer many of your questions as they are current Durham University students!

They're great fun and are really keen to make sure you feel at home and that you get as much as possible out of your time here. During the week they will be available to chat about university life and will run different social activities every evening to ensure that your time at Durham is unforgettable!

''I couldn’t have had a better mentor, and being in a mentor group was a brilliant opportunity to meet people on other courses, it really made the week.''
