Supported Progression

SP Subject Specific Requirements

In addition to the eligibility and selection criteria, certain subjects have specific requirements that applicants should be aware of. In all cases, SP students are expected to be taking three or more subjects at A level (or equivalent). So the subjects below are to be seen as included within your overall portfolio i.e. if your subject requires one specific A level, you will still be expected to be taking three or more overall.

  • blank boxes mean there are not currently any specific subjects required for SP
  • these requirements are based on the University's requirements for 2020 entry and are subject to change for 2021 entry.
SP Subject Required subjects and/or grades for SP
Accounting Maths A Level, or equivalent, OR have a grade 7 (or grade A) in Maths GCSE. We welcome the Core Mathematics Qualification and accept a grade 5 minimum (or grade B) in lieu of our GCSE Mathematics requirement.
Anthropology
Archaeology
Biosciences Biology, Chemistry or Human Biology at A-level, or equivalent, plus another science subject (Psychology, Maths and Geography count as a science) at A-level, or equivalent.
Business (Marketing & Management)

Maths at A level, or equivalent, OR have a grade 7 or above in Maths GCSE OR grade B or above in the Core Maths Qualification, for this subject.

Classics & Ancient History
Chemistry Maths and Chemistry at A level (or equivalent). You may also be eligible to apply for Levelling Up: Aspire Higher.
Computer Science Maths at A level (or equivalent).
Criminology & Sociology
Earth Sciences

At least two science subjects, which can include Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Geography, Economics, Biology, and Psychology. Biology and Psychology taken together count as one science A level and another science is also needed.

Please note, that if you are interested in applying for Geophysics as your programme of study, you will need to be taking Maths or Further Maths.

Economics & Finance Maths at A level (or equivalent).
Education Studies
Engineering Maths and Physics at A level or equivalent.
English Literature English Literature (or combined English Language and Literature) A level (or equivalent) for this subject.
Geography At least one science subject (Geography is accepted as a science) if you wish to pursue the BSc (physical).
History History at A level or equivalent (Ancient History does not count in lieu of ‘History’).
Law
Mathematics Maths and Further Maths at A level (or equivalent). You may also be eligible to apply for Levelling Up: Aspire Higher.
Modern Languages and Cultures French, German, or Spanish at A level (or equivalent).
Music Music at A level (or equivalent) OR if I you are not taking Music, you will be expected to have or be working toward ABRSM Grader VII Theory on top of three A levels.
Philosophy
Physics Maths and Physics at A level (or equivalent). You may also be eligible to apply for Levelling Up: Aspire Higher.
Politics

Must be taking at least one Humanities or Social Science subject at A level, or equivalent, This includes:

Ancient History, Anthropology, Business, Business Studies, Classical Civilisation, Classical Greek, Classical Studies, Economics, Economics and Business, English Language, English Language and Literature, English Literature, Geography, History, Languages (any), Music, Philosophy, Politics, Religious Studies, and Sociology.

Please note this does not currently include Government and Politics at A level.

Primary Education Grade C or above in English, Mathematics and a Science subject at GCSE (or equivalent).
Psychology 5 (or grade B) in GCSE Maths (or equivalent).
Sport Please note you do not need to have Sport or PE at A level for this subject.
