Chris Deelman Travel Scholarship

The School of Modern Languages and Cultures (MLAC) is delighted to offer the Chris Deelman Travel Scholarship, which is provided through the generous support of Chris’s parents, Harry and Margaret Deelman.

One scholarship award is available for undergraduate students who undertake a year abroad study placement at a Chinese university as part of their Chinese Studies undergraduate degree course. The award (a minimum of £700) must be solely used to help fund a 30-day travel period in China during the year abroad and needs to be used outside of the academic semester-times of the host university.

Please note: this award is only open to applications from current Year Two students undertaking the BA in Chinese Studies with Year Abroad programme who are anticipating their Year Abroad to take place in 2020/21. Current Year Two students taking Chinese Studies modules as part of their BA in Liberal Arts programme are not eligible

  • Students are required to study on a Durham University undergraduate Chinese Studies degree course
  • As part of this course students must be undertaking a year abroad at a Chinese University
  • The scholarship is to provide funding to support a 30-day travel period in China during the Chinese University vacation periods.

Prospective applicants must submit by 5pm on Monday 2nd March 2020:

    • an online scholarship application including a personal statement of no more than 500 words describing;
      • How and where you plan to spend your 30-day travel period in China
      • How this will help your understanding of Chinese Language and Culture, and therefore your studies
      • Why you would be the most appropriate student for this award, taking into consideration the spirit and intentions behind this scholarship

  • All eligible applications will be considered on the basis of the information provided and how well each applicant reflects the ethos and spirit behind the Scholarship.
