A research-led education
When you join Durham University you will be joining a world top 100 University where our postgraduate students are fully immersed in the world-class research culture. The results of Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2014 fully confirm Durham's international profile in research with 83 per cent of Durham’s research being assessed as internationally excellent quality or world leading, categorised as 3* or 4*. REF 2014 identified world-leading research in every Durham University subject. Areas of particular strength include Anthropology, Archaeology, Chemistry, Classics, Education, English, Law, Music, Physics and Theology. For research impact, Chemistry and Education were top amongst their respective subjects in the country and Theology was second nationally.
Further details on our research outputs, research environment, and research impact are available on our REF webpages.
Modules studied by taught students are developed as a result of this world-class research being conducted, and postgraduate research students work in collaboration with academics to push forward the boundaries of their subject. Durham provides a place where students at every stage of their career will find a supportive environment to develop themselves and their ideas.
"I chose to study at Durham due to the expertise of my supervisors. The Geography department at Durham houses some of the world-leading scientists in coastal geomorphology (i.e. the underlying theme of my PhD), most of whom, if not all, are heavily citied. Working closely with experts in my field becomes particularly important for validating and refining my research. Also, it affords me the opportunity to learn from the experiences from people who have already established themselves in the field, which becomes important for continuing my professional development."
Avidesh Seenath, Geography, PhD
