Durham University Alumni Tuition Fee Discount Scheme

Durham University is delighted to announce the introduction of a tuition fee discount scheme for University alumni who choose to return to Durham University to study at Postgraduate level from the start of the 2018/19 academic year.

A tuition fee discount of 10% will be awarded to any self-funding Durham alumni who was successful in completing a qualification at Durham University at degree level or above.

  • Alumni of Durham University will include anyone who has been awarded a degree from Durham at first degree or higher. Therefore, this will exclude anyone with CHE/DHE, postgraduate/CPD credits only.
  • How will I apply for this discount?

Students will be asked to indicate at the point of enrolment if they think they will be eligible for the discount. Confirmation of the discount will be provided on your tuition fee invoice, once your eligibility has been confirmed. Your invoice will be sent to you by email and will then reflect your tuition fee after the discount has been applied.

  • How do I indicate that I am eligible for this discount?

When you enrol at the University you will be required to confirm who will be responsible for your tuition fees and whether you think you are eligible for any discount.

If you/your parents are paying your tuition fees, or you are receiving tuition fee loans from the Student Loans Company, NEFirst Credit Union or Postgraduate Careers Development loans (PCDL) or other loans scheme you should select that you are ‘self-funding’ during the enrolment process and the discount will be automatically applied when you receive your tuition fee invoice.

  • I had completed online enrolment before I became aware of the Alumni Discount, can I still apply for it?

If you send an email including your student ID number to studentbilling.query@durham.ac.uk they will consider your application. Your invoice will be amended if you are eligible for the discount.

  • I receive a scholarship or bursary for part of my tuition fees, can I still get the alumni discount?

If you receive an award which is lower than the value of your tuition fees then you will still receive the alumni tuition fee discount. However, if your award is greater than the value of your discounted tuition fees then you will only be eligible for a discount up to the value of the award you are receiving (e.g. discounted tuition fee of £6,000 mean you will be charged £5,400 after your discount. If you receive an award of £5,600 then your discount will be adjusted to £400 and we will invoice your sponsor for the total amount of your award).

  • I receive a scholarship or bursary for part of my tuition fees, can I still get the alumni discount?

If you receive a scholarship or bursary which is lower than the value of your tuition fees then you will still be eligible for the alumni tuition fee discount. The discount will be calculated based on your reduced tuition fees e.g. discounted tuition fee of £6,000 means you will be charged £5,400 after your discount.

  • I am receiving financial support from an external source for tuition fees (e.g. Scholarship/RCUK) will I still be eligible for a discount?

Unfortunately, you will not be eligible for a tuition fee discount in these circumstances as you will not be a ‘self-funding’ student. Your funder will be responsible for your tuition fees.

  • Will any postgraduate programmes be excluded from this scheme?

It is intended that the scheme will be available as widely as possible to self-financing postgraduates (including research). Therefore all programmes will initially be included.

  • I am planning to study for a PGCE, will I still be eligible for the Alumni discount?

Yes, the alumni discount will still be provided for this course if you are self-funding or are in receipt of a student loan.

  • Will any of my years of study be excluded from the scheme?

Students on Postgraduate Research programmes will be eligible for this discount during the period of ‘supervised study’, providing they remain self-funding. However, the final part of the programme (known as the continuation period) will not be eligible for a discount.
