What's Durham City like as a place?
We really love Durham and think it's a great place to be!
Talk to any of our students (or graduates) and they are sure to have their own views on what they love the most about being in Durham. Here final year Anthroplogy student Freya (pictured front right) explains what she loves the most about living in Durham......
"I love Durham as there are always a variety of social events on. Who doesn’t love to dress up and go to fantastic balls with 3 course meals, fairground rides and awesome DJ’s.
If that’s not your scene there is Gospel – the perfect excuse to dress up in something ridiculous with your group of friends and party in the day time. There is such a variety, with Fashion shows, Champagne balls, Sports balls, Aggression sessions (Black tie boxing event), College balls, Bar fests, socials, formals, to even just a chilled pub quiz. Durham will not fail to keep your social calendar filled, the perfect way to compliment all your hard work.
Not only are there university events, but with Newcastle only a short train journey away there’s a whole new city to explore and a variety of funky cocktail bars to be uncovered."
A compact city....
"I love Durham because of the fact it’s quite a small city. This may worry some of you, but have no fear, it creates such a great sense of community, you never get lost and will always feel safe.
This is particularly ideal for you can walk everywhere and not need to pay for a taxi (so it won’t affect your overdraft!) There are still a great variety of pubs, bars, and restaurants to keep you busy enough that you won’t feel too enclosed. Plus, if you were to leave the Durham bubble, Newcastle is just a quick train journey away, or you can get to York, Leeds and even journey to Edinburgh for day trips.
For those who are more outdoorsy, you can hop on the bus and go to the beach (although I’m not promising though that it’s bikini weather…)."
"I love Durham because the HUGE (yes HUGE!!) variety of sport it offers at all levels, from representing the University, to sports in college for those who prefer things to be more chilled. The fact there is so much choice is insane and the ability to take part in a sport you would never have been able to play is amazing. We are very lucky here at Durham to have such opportunities. Taking part in a team creates a great sense of belonging, not to mention being good exercise to keep you fit and healthy.
In addition to playing in teams, you can get involved in umpiring and sports societies. So, regardless of your motives for engaging in sport, you can be sure that there is a place for you here at Durham."
