St Cuthbert's Society

Postgraduates & the JCR

All postgraduate students at St Cuthbert's Society belong to the Junior Common Room (JCR), the student body of the college.

Within the JCR, the postgraduate community is represented by the Postgraduate and Mature Students Rep (Jack Simmonds), who is responsible for making sure the views and concerns of postgraduate students are represented in the JCR. He can be contacted by email:

The Rep chairs the Postgraduate Committee, which meets at least twice a term to organise events, both academic and social, for the benefit of the whole postgraduate community.

All postgraduates are welcome to get involved in any area of Cuth's life by joining sports or societies, attending Formal Dinners, or taking part in social, careers and scholarly events.

In particular, the Postgraduate Committee organises Research Fora, events at which both postgraduates and SCR members give brief talks on their current research. Anyone from the wider Cuth's community is welcome to attend to hear their research and join in the discussion. Topics have included: Prehistoric cave art, galaxy formation, social signals and emotion recognition, peace-building and post-conflict society, echoes of Old Norse mythology in C18th British culture.

Postgraduate Committee

The purpose of the Postgraduate Committee is to assist and support the Postgraduate and Mature Students Rep, to organise and put on events of both an academic and social nature that are of benefit to the entire postgraduate community at Cuth's, and to represent the views and concerns of the postgraduates within the JCR as a whole. Elections for positions on the Postgraduate Committee are run throughout the year at JCR meetings.
