Location & Buildings

Our location...

We are so privileged at St Aidan’s to have beautiful views over the ancient and majestic city of Durham. Situated at the top of Windmill Hill, the view of Durham Cathedral from our gardens is by far the best in the city and is a constant reminder of the history and tradition that we are part of. The College is a 10 minute stroll from the Science Site and is within easy walking distance from the city centre, the quickest routes follow the banks of the river right into the heart of Durham.

Our buildings...

St Aidan’s was designed by Sir Basil Spence, the renowned architect who was responsible for Coventry Cathedral, making us one of the most architecturally interesting Colleges.

The estate was designed around a theme of curves and straights, broadly in the form of a hand, with parallel accommodation corridors that enclose a spacious garden and beautiful landscaped grounds, which are used for relaxation and sport throughout the year. The main body of the building, the "palm", houses a Gymnasium, Music Room, Shop, Bar, Offices and a well-equipped Junior Common Room. Outside, there is a Tennis Court.
