Growing Old in West Newcastle

Search is running a programme of events and activities focusing on key periods and themes in the history of the local area. Field trips, drama, song, and other activities will be used to bring together residents of different ages to explore and discuss their experiences of living through decades of change in West Newcastle.

The programme began with a visit to Woodhorn Colliery mining museum, prompting memories of work and social life in the past. As well as exhibitions about the history and experience of coal mining and mining communities in Northumberland, the museum also houses a collection of art from the now famous local Pitmen Painters.
