Vice-Chancellor's Scholarships - North East

We are delighted to offer The Vice-Chancellor's Scholarships - North East. The scholarships are designed to support applicants from the North East who have been active in student and/or community life and who wish to enhance their knowledge and skills by undertaking a degree at Durham University.

The scholarships are worth £2,000 per year and are open to applicants undertaking a degree at either undergraduate, postgraduate taught or postgraduate research level.

Applicants must meet the following eliigibiltiy criteria

  • Have submitted an academic application to the University for a programme of study commencing in October 2019

  • Permanently resident in the North East i.e. not living in the North East for the sole purpose of study.

Postgraduate Taught and Postgraduate Research applicants will also be eligible if they are able to demonstrate a historical connection with the North East for example if they grew up in the North East and have been studying elsewhere for a period of time.

Postcodes commencing with the following letters constitute the North East for the purpose of eligibility- DH, DL, NE, SR or TS;

  • Have an income below £30,000;

  • Have been active in student and/or community life - organised or taken part voluntarily in an activity to support fellow students or the community


£2,000 per academic year.


The scholarship can be held for the duration of your programme of study

26th November 2018

Application window closes:

2nd March 2019

Applicants will be notified of the outcome by:

30th March 2019

Applicants who meet the eligibilty criteria will be put forward to the Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship Committee who will consider your contribution to student/community life, information in your personal statement and reference when reaching their decision.

Please note that other scholarships, awards and bursaries may be taken into account by the selection panel.

Please ensure your reference includes information relating to your student or community activity

Please also provide one of the following documents to confirm your income

Student Finance England applicants - please upload a copy of your Student Finance England assessment detailing the amounts of tuition and maintenance loan you will be due to receive in 2019/20

International and postgraduate applicants are asked to submit a copy of one of the following in English:

3 months bank statements

Copy of your P60 (April 2018)

Copy of funding confirmation for the academic year 2018/19
