Parkinson's Pals Success

On 5th June 2025, Parkinson’s Pals UG volunteers completed a 22km walk from Durham to the Angel of the North to raise funds for the Durham Parkinson’s Branch. Despite rain, muddy footpaths, and plenty of sore legs, the team – Biosciences Undergraduates, Jessica Fewkes (Project Manager), Ella Tuke-Hastings, Ella Clinton, Lydia Church, and Grace Denton - took on the challenge with determination.
At the finish line, they were warmly welcomed by Tina from the local Parkinson’s group, who greeted them with signs and balloons.
Wearing blue Parkinson’s awareness t-shirts throughout the walk, the volunteers helped spark conversations along the way and raised visibility for the condition. The fundraiser brought in £360, surpassing its £300 target and raising the scheme’s total for the year to £560. All proceeds are going directly to the Durham Branch of Parkinson’s UK, supporting weekly community sessions and social activities for people living with Parkinson’s in the local area.
Parkinson’s Pals is a student-led volunteering scheme at Durham University (third Year) that builds intergenerational connections between students and those affected by Parkinson’s disease. Volunteers take part in regular community sessions and events, offering support and raising awareness. The scheme, affiliated with Parkinson’s UK and the Wolfson Research Institute for Health and Wellbeing, is the first of its kind in the UK.
Thanks to the generosity of all who contributed, the walk helped raise both funds and awareness for the group, proving that every step, even in the rain, can make a meaningful difference!
