AI and medical humanities

Leads: Sj Bennett (Geography), Alex Campolo (Philosophy),  Angela Woods (IMH, English Studies) and Victoria Patton (IMH)

What are the implications of the use of AI for understandings and experiences of health and illness? How is AI transforming not only clinical practices but also medical knowledge itself? As machine learning algorithms process ever more data about human bodies, genes, populations, and environments, what new medical categories and norms are emerging? And what social, epistemological and ethical concepts can we draw on to ensure that AI tools benefit communities rather than exacerbate existing health inequalities?

From the use of ambient scribes in the consulting room to the ethical implications of algorithmic decision making in clinical settings, this research theme will use medical humanities approaches and methods to explore how AI technologies (re)shape medical practice, patient narratives and healthcare relationships.
