An interdisciplinary symposium on Tourette Syndrome, imagining a future of Tourettic Studies that is looking beyond the syndrome.
“What is next for the study of Tourette Syndrome and the people it most impacts (Tourettic people them/ourselves)?”Tourette Syndrome is becoming increasingly on the radars of academics, media outlets, and the general public, and this has been especially the case over the last 5 years. Unfortunately, a lot of this increasing interest has come out of the stigmatisation of Tourettic communities both inside and outside of academic spaces. With this in mind, we have arrived at a pivotal moment for the future of Tourette Syndrome research specifically, and intervention is needed.Drawing upon Jones’ (2025) provocations Thoughts towards Tourettic Studies, this symposium brings together key stakeholders and thinkers in Tourette Syndrome research spaces to imagine a future of Tourettic studies, which actively works to bring together disciplines and sectors, and uses the Tourettic (culture, politic, aesthetic, joy, woe, experience and so on) as a starting point for research instead of employing a sole focus on syndrome. The event will include 5 provocations towards Tourettic Studies, and include opportunity for questions and discussions throughout.Speakers include:Dr. Daniel P. Jones (Durham University, UK)Danni Phoenix-Kane (University of Hertfordshire, UK)Dr. Rena Zito (Elon University, USA)Dr. Daniel Whittaker (University of Worcester, UK)Dr. Diana Beljaars (Swansea University, UK)
