Welcome to Emily Tupper

Emily has a background in anthropology and completed her doctorate here at Durham in 2022. Her thesis explores the intersections between movement and care in “movement volunteering” groups – groups that combine the movement of the body with caring activities such as improving community spaces and helping others to move. During and following her PhD, Emily worked as a research assistant on a number of different projects that explored people’s experiences of health in different contexts, such as children’s experiences of the school journey, and LGBTQ+ young people’s experiences of health inequalities.

More broadly, Emily is interested in how people move and are moved by each other, and how environments and materials participate in this process. She is experienced in ethnographic and mobile methodologies and has a current interest in how babies are moved by others in caring contexts, historically and in the present day. 

Emily will initially be exploring how the humanities, arts, and social sciences might come together to research the moving body, and is looking forward to creating new interdisciplinary spaces for researching movement.
