Panel discussion

The Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience (IHRR) at Durham University hosted an event on 'Bridging the Gap between Research and Practice' for early career scientists on 24 October 2023.

This event aimed to bring early career scientists researching hazards/risk/resilience together with academics and local practitioners involved in tackling a diverse range of issues, to improve our understanding of how research can be translated into practice. The event took the form of a panel discussion around pre-determined questions. The panel consisted of two Durham academics, Prof. Helen Wilson and Dr Sim Reaney, along with practitioners including Heather Devey (co-director of Wild Intrigue CIC), Laura Dobson (civil contingencies planner for Durham County Council), and Prof. Neil Denton (independent community mediator).

Key questions discussed:

  • How does your research/work engage with researchers/practitioners?

  • Where do the responsibilities of people working in and researching hazard, risk, and resilience start and end?

  • How do you define impact and what route would you take to achieve that?
