Disaster-Induced Changes and their Impact on Women's Wellbeing: A Case Study of the Gorkha Earthquake in Dolakha, Nepal

This study delves into the transformative impact of the Gorkha Earthquake on women's lives in Dolakha, Nepal, uncovering both positive and negative changes post-disaster.  While a majority perceived positive shifts, such as increased social cohesion and employment opportunities, challenges like homelessness and inadequate living conditions disproportionately affected women.  The study emphasizes the constructive nature of disasters, illustrating opportunities for community development and enhanced cooperation.  Rural areas experienced more pronounced positive changes, with disparities noted in urban settings.  Ethnic and caste factors influenced outcomes, with marginalized groups reporting higher agreement rates. 

Despite the positive aspects, challenges emerged, notably in women's wellbeing due to prolonged temporary housing and limited access to learning opportunities.  The gendered division of labour constrained women's participation in skill training.  This comprehensive examination offers crucial insights into post-disaster recovery dynamics, emphasizing the intersectionality of gender, housing, and reconstruction processes following the Gorkha Earthquake.  The study underscores the need for nuanced understanding and future research to explore the intricate dynamics of post-disaster recovery, gender roles, and their lasting impact on community wellbeing.  Recognizing the evolving nature of social relationships post-disaster, this research contributes significantly to the broader discourse on disaster management and sustainable development.
