Do you want to share your research on risk with a wider audience? Sharing through film and digital storytelling can help you reach that audience. Would you like to know how to build the narrative of the video, technically record and edit it? If ‘YES!’, then the Exploring Risk Science Digital storytelling course is here to help.

The Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience presents: the Exploring Risk Film Festival: Session 1: Becoming a Digital Storyteller, 4th April 2022

The Exploring Risk Science: Digital Storytelling course aims to empower researchers with new skills in visual communication that are designed to connect and resonate with an audience. The workshops that make up the course will equip you with knowledge of narrative story-telling and the basics of technical film-making. By attending this course, you will develop skills in enhancing the exposure of your research, prompting and participating in public debates through film-making and raising the profile of science in society.

The workshop will cover both storytelling and technical issues, each of which will cover the fundamentals while providing guidance on their next steps. The course will be a combination of taught sessions and practical implementation of the skills. Through the course of the sessions, you will produce a short film and receive feedback on your project. The workshop does not assume any previous knowledge in filmmaking but will still be of interest to people who have already started on their filmmaking journey.

The workshop is open to everyone interesting in telling their story about Exploring Risk. The dates for the course sessions are:

  • 4th April 2022 10am to 1pm – Session 1: Becoming a Digital Storyteller, on-demand video
  • 8th April 2022 10am to 1pm – Session 2: Planning & Visualising Your Story, online interactive session
  • 8th April 2022 10am to 1pm – Session 3: Making your Digital Story: production, on-demand video series
  • 14th April 2022 – Showcasing your Digital Story, online interactive session

On completion of the course and your digital story, you will have the opportunity to share your video on this website and with wider audiences via video sharing sites, such as YouTube and Vimeo. You will also have the opportunity to present your work at the next Exploring Risk Film Festival at Durham University, organised and presented by the Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience.
