Want to know more about how we interact with our local community?

Our monthly Community Newsletter explores the news, events, and research both at Durham University and in the city itself.

This month, we have some family-friendly events such as various arts-based workshops at the Oriental Museum and a series of lectures by our academics at the Spanish Gallery in Bishop Auckland

We've also included news that might interest our local community, including information about our strategy refresh, the County Durham Pound winning the Best Public Sector Project at the 2023 Social Value Conference, the Durham City Run Festival, and the Lumiere light festival. We've also included some news about one of our academics visiting the Pelton Community Primary School to inspire the next generation of roboticists and that our Science Engagement team has recognized the achievements of pupils in our community studying Physics.

The newsletter's Spotlight section highlights the work our staff do that involves and benefits the local community. This month's Spotlight features Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Global) Professor Claire O'Malley, who is on the University Executive Committee and is chair of the Community Engagement Task Force.

The research conducted at Durham University is world-leading, and we've highlighted a few stories that the local community might find interesting. Learn about the increase in media coverage of women's football over the last few years, how we're using gravitational waves to hunt for dark matter, our role in developing a new laser-based system of satellite communications, and that one of our projects on improving wind turbine technology has been shortlisted for the World Sustainability Awards 2023.
