The nearest airport is Newcastle (NCL) which is well connected to Amsterdam, London and Paris. Newcastle airport is a 25min drive (£40 by taxi) or a 45min train ride (£10) from the centre of Durham.
Alternatively, Manchester airport (MCR) is much larger and better connected, but located further away. There are direct trains between Manchester airport and Durham.
Durham can be easily accessed by train with direct connections to London (Kings Cross), Newcastle, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. A complete timetable of the trains and a journey planner can be found here.
Durham is connected to the A1 motorway linking York to Edinburgh. Parking permits can in principle be obtained for University parkings, but should be arranged in advance.
