Durham Music Department ranked in the top 3 music departments in REF 2014
Durham Music Department has been ranked in the top three music departments nationally in the Research Excellence Framework 2014, which assesses the research produced by all third-level institutions in the country.
The HEFCE results place the Music Department 3rd overall for research excellence in music, and 6th-equal out of the 84 departments submitted under the general category of music, drama, dance, and performing arts. The Times Higher combined rankings, which also include intensity statistics accounting for the number of staff submitted, placed the Department 2nd out of 84 departments.
The result confirms our status as a national and international leader in musical research. Based on criteria of originality, rigour and significance, the REF has rated 90% of the Music Department’s submitted research as world-leading or internationally excellent, that is, as falling in the two highest categories of 4* and 3*. 100% of the research submitted under impact, which measures its significance for the wider world, was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent, as was the Department’s research environment. The Department was also rated 100% research-intensive by the Higher Education Statistics Agency, which means that all of its academic staff contributed to the overall result.
